Duties:
The Stratford Fire Department provides an essential service to the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Firefighters work together as members of a high-performing team, often working extended periods of time in emergency situations, training, or other duties around the fire station.
Work Performed:
- Performs fire suppression and prevention under the regular supervision of an Officer.
- Respond to alarms, drive and operate equipment and related apparatus and assist in the suppression of fires, including rescue, advancing lines, ventilation and salvage work, and extrication and emergency medical care of victims.
- Respond to medical emergencies. Provide emergency medical response and aid to ill and injured persons. Perform rescue/extrication operations where necessary.
- Perform clean up and overhaul work and establish temporary utility services.
- Assist in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire stations and grounds.
- Perform fire code inspections of business establishments and prepare pre-fire plans.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, inspect for gas leaks, secure vehicle accidents, etc.
- Participate in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled training and classes.
- Conduct station tours for the public, schools, and community demonstrations and programs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older and legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Possess a secondary school diploma (Grade 12 or equivalent);
- Must have valid Ontario Fire Administration Inc. Canada (OFAI) certificates for stages 1, 2 and 3. For more information please visit OFAI – Ontario Fire Administration Inc. | Standardized Firefighter Testing Services. (All costs associated with the OFAI are the responsibility of the applicant.)
- Be National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I and II certified from an accredited program from a recognized institution, accredited by the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board (must be complete with seals);
- Possess a valid DZ Driver’s Licence with a good driving record;
- Must be able to meet screening requirements including but not limited to a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check;
- Possess and maintain a valid standard first aid certificate and a valid ‘basic rescuer’ Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate (Level C) or better. ;
- Possess superior interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively as a member of an effective and professional team;
- Must be willing to work 24-hour rotating shifts including weekends and holidays averaging 42 hours per week;
- Have a commitment to lifelong learning, community engagement and continuous improvement;
- Have a strong desire to serve the community, a strong work ethic, a strong sense of loyalty and duty, and the ability and willingness to follow instructions promptly and efficiently.
Specialized Skills, Abilities, Training, License, Memberships, or Certifications
- University Degree, College Diploma, and/or Trade Certification recognized by the Ontario College of Trades in any discipline;
- Emergency Medical Responder and/or certified as instructor;
- Previous civilian or military experience in fire suppression, construction, trades mechanical, emergency medical, large vehicle operation, fire prevention;
- Ability to handle high-pressure situations and environments;
- Community Service involvement;
- Administrative and computer skills.
