Job Description
The Town of Midland is seeking a Probationary Firefighter as a career member of the Fire Department.
A Probationary Firefighter, working under the supervision of Officers, is responsible for working as part of a professional team; operating and maintaining firefighting apparatus, equipment, and fire stations; combating fires; performing rescue work; administering designated emergency medical procedures/aid; inspecting properties and equipment for fire hazards; participating in public education programs and continually upgrading skills, knowledge and physical requirements to current standards.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Hold an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D) or academic equivalent.
- Applicants must have successfully completed the Candidate Testing Services (CTS) with valid certificates for all stages. For more information, please visit www.ofai.ca. (All costs associated with the test are the responsibility of the applicant).
- Possess the following International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC)/Pro Board and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certificates:
- IFSAC/Pro Board NFPA 1001, Level I and Level II Firefighter Training.
- IFSAC/Pro Board NFPA 1002, Driver Operator Certification or a certificate of achievement for completing a Pump Operators course.
- IFSAC/Pro Board NPFA 472, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations; or
- IFSAC/Pro Board NFPA 1072, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR/AED Level C certification required. Completion of higher-level certification or E.M.S training is an asset.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License minimum class DZ with a driver’s abstract deemed satisfactory by the Town of Midland required.
- Do not have any criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Specialized rescue courses are an asset.
- Ability to work shifts, including days/nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform duties of this position.
- Due to reasons of safety, facial hair (i.e., beards and sideburns) are not permitted as they may affect the integrity of the face piece seal of self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Demonstrated initiative, mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Agility and strength to do prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
- Ability to react quickly and remain calm under duress and strain.
- Considerable knowledge of:
- Modern firefighting techniques and fire prevention methods.
- Municipal By-laws, Provincial and Federal Acts relative to the supervisory activities of the fire department.
- Rules and regulations governing the fire department and operational guidelines of the department.
- The municipality, including its demographics, major industries, elements, and hazardous occupancies.
- Water systems and water mains within the municipality.
- Thorough knowledge of:
- The operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and rescue activities.
- First-aid, CPR, Defibrillation.
- Vehicle/pump hydraulics.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive/confidential or confrontational topics.
- Demonstrated ability to build high levels of credibility within diverse work groups as well as the ability to develop productive partnerships with a range of stakeholders.

This MPFFA union position offers a starting hourly wage rate of $30.06, based on a 42-hour work week. Currently in a trial for a 24-hour shift schedule based on a 28-day cycle.
